COPING WITH CORONAVIRUS AS AN ARTIST

I recently chatted with Constance McBride of Chadds Ford Live about what it's like to be an artist during the COVID-19 pandemic. I shared how my show schedule has been impacted, as well as what I am working on now. Click HERE to read the feature.

INSPIRATIONAL WOMEN SOLO EXHIBITION AND COVID-19

This week, you should have been able able to stroll through the Hutson Gallery at the Chester County Art Association in West Chester, PA, taking in the sight of over 50 oil paintings of fantastic women. My Inspirational Solo exhibition was scheduled three years ago. I knew then that I wanted to produce a collection that would make a difference. Instead, our planet is fighting a deadly virus.

For my solo, I chose to paint incredible, strong women. These are women who overcame hardships, broke records and blazed trails, shattering glass ceilings along the way.

As you may remember, this is the gallery where last year I showed the massive portrait of my son, “Polypharmacized: The Face of Autism,” created from over 1,200 prescription pill bottles --- and, "Pretty Boy," a male peacock cardboard dress modeled at the show's opening by the lovely drag queen, Amie Vanite. Both pieces, sending strong messages.

With the number of U.S. COVID-19 deaths exceeding 80,000, it is imperative that we protect one another by continuing to social distance. I will see your smiling faces when the skies clear. Sign up for my monthly newsletter to learn about new show dates. Be safe. xo

WHEN RON CEPHAS JONES COMMENTS ON YOUR INSTAGRAM POST

When Ron Cephas Jones (@cephasjaz) comments on your Instagram post, it makes your day!

MY INSTAGRAM POST

I’ve been thinking a lot about Hulu’s teen melodrama done right, “Looking for Alaska.” The sleeper star of the 8-episode limited series is Ron Cephas Jones as Dr. Hyde, a wise and crusty professor who is a gay #Buddhist (if RCJ looks familiar, it’s probably because he played the role of Randall Pearson’s biological father in the series “This is Us”). After the death of someone I can’t tell you about or it would spoil it for you, Dr. Hyde said, “The Buddha said that suffering was caused by desire, we'd learned, and that the cessation of desire meant the cessation of suffering. When you stopped wishing things wouldn't fall apart, you'd stop suffering when they did.” These words hold special meaning for me.

I watched the episode last night, and am today painting lotus flowers.

In #Buddhism and #Hinduism the #lotus flower is the embodiment of perfection. It defines the capacity of the soul to expand and embrace the beauty of life with a clear conscience. The #lotusflower sheds its seeds and blooms at the same time. In Buddhism, it is said to represent the principle of cause and effect, wherein every action or thought is believed to cause an effect or reaction that can be experienced either in this life or in the future lives. This magnificent flower emerges from the dirty and unclean bottom of a pond, but still remains untouched and unstained by the dirt and mud surrounding it in the pond. This unique quality of the flower is believed to represent pure #spirit #rebirth #beauty #fertility #transcendence and #resurrection
