HANDMADE QUILTS FROM THE HEART

baby-quilt-jungle-theme-nursery-merrill-weber

I am thrilled to announce that I recently made a beautiful heirloom baby quilt for my grandchild, who is due to enter the world very soon! I wanted to create something special for my baby’s baby.

I chose a sage green jungle theme to complement the baby's nursery, with a classic gingham pattern for the backing. My favorite fabric has to be the sloths, or the bananas, or the pineapples. It's hard to choose!

Many thanks to my college roommate and quilting mentor, Peggy, for offering endless guidance along the way.

My daughter loves her new baby quilt!

Although a lifetime collector of quilts, my history of making them includes only four.

The first quilt I made was for a school fundraiser. The quilt sold for more than anything else, raising the most money for the school. I had my daughter’s classmates and teachers create self-portrait squares. I then stitched the squares together, adding sashing and button accents.

*Fun fact: Taylor Swift was attending her school at the time.

The second quilt was a gift for a middle school teacher who went above and beyond for my children. I added photos, squares created by her students and more. It brought her to tears when the principal presented the special appreciation quilt to her during a school assembly. This teacher gave everything to her students. She deserved this quilt - and so much more. Rest in peace, Ms. C.

The third quilt was a fun upcycling project, where I used all repurposed materials, including men's ties, jeans and dress shirts. This quilt hangs on the wall just outside my kitchen.

I cannot wait to see my grandson snuggled up in his jungle quilt, made with so much love, joy and anticipation.

Here’s to more cozy quilts and happy memories.

Grandma

PORTRAIT OF MY MOTHER, DE YOUNG MUSEUM, PICTURES OF PEOPLE EXHIBITION

 betty-ann-weber-portrait-de-young-museum-merrill-weber

My contribution to the de Young Museum's "Pictures of People" exhibition

Alice Neel (1900–1984) referred to her paintings as “pictures of people,” emphasizing the humanity of her sitters. She was one of the century’s most radical painters; a champion of social justice whose longstanding commitment to humanist principles inspired her life as well as her art.

As part of the comprehensive retrospective of Alice Neel's work at the de Young, the museum asked artists to share their creative works of “pictures of people.”

The museum's prompt: Why and how did you choose to represent this person? How did making the picture help you to better understand this person or your relationship to them?

My response to the prompt:

Painting my sweet mother’s portrait brought me closer to her. As a toddler, she would tint whipped cream and encourage me to paint on the walls while taking a bath. She taught me to play the ukulele and was my Brownie troop leader. She ran talent shows at my elementary school. She wrote published children’s books that she had me illustrate.

At the young age I was painting, singing and dancing, my mom witnessed the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

She helped name my paintings, until Alzheimer’s slowly took her away from me. Painting my mom allowed me to appreciate her life even more. I love and miss her dearly.

My collection of more than 50 of my Inspirational Women oil paintings was on view during my solo exhibition at Chester County Art Association and at The Media Arts Council.

HUG YOUR MOTHER!

Thank you for visiting,

Merrill

inspiratonal-women-merrill-weber

UPDATE: Click HERE to see my artist's talk from the opening reception.

The Inspirational Women are on the move! For five years, I have been painting a collection of now more than 60 oil painting portraits of incredible, strong women. These are women who overcame hardships, broke records and blazed trails, shattering glass ceilings along the way.

Friday, June 3, 2022 from 5 to 7 pm, the Media Arts Council hosts the Grand Opening of the MAC Arts Center, with a ribbon cutting, reception and artist talk.

Two exhibitions will be shown at the Center through June 26, 2022; my Inspirational Women, and Big French Dance – A Documentary Exhibit featuring photographs by Ron Stanford. This project by Ron and Fay Stanford in the 1970s, who spent two years in southwest Louisiana documenting regional French music, is an unexpected time capsule of Louisiana life and a treasure for art and music lovers alike!

This show will make you feel inspired, confident and ready to make a difference in the world.

For directions to the Media Arts Council Arts Center, 11 E. State Street, Media, Pennsylvania, click HERE. Parking lot map is found HERE. You will want #4 Firehouse/Jasper Street lot.

Hope to see you there!

"Spring Tulips," 6x6-inch oil painting by Merrill Weber

The early bird gets the worm, or my County Collector piece, in this case.  The show runs Saturday, May 14, 2022 from 10 am to 6 pm, with the second and last day being Sunday, May 15, 2022 from 11 am to 5 pm

Spring Tulips, an original framed oil painting for $75! Yep, you read that correctly. The first person to arrive at my studio #101 during the tour (doors open at 10 am) gets first dibs!

What is a County Collector painting? It is a fun part of the tour. It is to encourage you to come to an artist's studio first. Every artist creates one commemorative piece that can only be purchased on the days of the tour (May 14 & 15), in person.

At Spring City Mill Studios, we usually have people waiting outside when the doors open at 10 am on May 14. The only way to be sure to get it!

We're #1 on the studio tour map, with 12 artists showing our work in our renovated historic knitting mill building built in 1896.
